It is really amazing that the India-born scientist Venkatraman Ramakrishnan was irresponsible enough to have made such an outrageous statement concerning homeopathy. Perhaps this chemist should be reminded that a large portion of the population of India has primarily and effectively relied, for their health and well-being, upon homeopathy – a ‘new’ scientific form of medicine that has become an important part of their medical care system for the last two centuries.

I am sure the arrogance and pride that such prestigious awards like the Nobel Prize bestows upon some people makes them lose touch with reality – so much so that they believe they can comment on anything. Even Venkatraman Ramakrishnan himself allegedly added: “sometimes scientists propose ideas well outside their area of expertise and make mistakes.” Perhaps this is one of those instances.

It is all too common that receivers of high-ranking honours do not realise that their casual remarks carry additional strength owing to the prestigious award they hold. In this particular case, the prejudiced comments of Venkatraman Ramakrishnan carry an undeserved strength that is far in excess of his personal importance. The consequences of such casual remarks may indirectly prevent thousands of suffering people in India from finding a solution for their ill health.

I have lived in India and I came to love the Indian people – not only for their keen scientific minds but also for their warm hearts and their deep respect for humanity. That is why I am so amazed to read the statements of Venkatraman Ramakrishnan. However, I do not want to be too hard on him.

The deserved answer will not come from me at this moment. Nevertheless, if it is agreeable with Venkatraman Ramakrishnan, we can start a public dialogue based principally on my evidence-based work and writings, whereby I would like him to show me just what is ‘bogus’ in homeopathy.

At this moment I will appeal to all those who have benefited from homeopathy to participate in the polls that the Hindustan Times have instigated. I am sure there is going to be an overwhelming condemnation of his unfortunate ignorance and arrogance.

I am also sure that, if Venkatraman Ramakrishnan is an honest man (which I believe he is), he will soon feel the bitter taste (from the sting of his conscience) of the potential damage his biased remarks have done to the poor suffering peoples of India.

Yours faithfully,

Prof. George Vithoulkas
