The Science of Homeopathy – page 52

Such cases also highlight the observation that there are quite pre- dictable pathways which are followed in degenerating cases. Along these pathways, there are “stations” representing progressively deeper lines of defense created by the defense mechanism. These stations are crucial; otherwise, a morbific stimulus would rapidly penetrate to the deepest levels of the organism and quickly result in death.

The relationship of stations along a pathway has long been known by orthodox medicine, at least on the physical level of symptomatol- ogy. Cancers of different types have characteristic organs to which they metastasize: breast cancers to regional lymph nodes, lung, bones, and brain; prostate cancer to the lymphatic system and bones of the pelvis, and then to the spine; lung cancer to local nodes, the central nervous system, the long bones, kidneys, the adrenal glands, and the skin. Autoimmune disorders characteristically affect certain tissues to the exclusion of others: rheumatic fever and rheumatic disorders of other types produce streptococcal pharyngitis, heart valve degenera- tion, glomerular nephritis, rheumatoid arthritis, etc.; lupus erythema- tosus produces characteristic skin eruptions, nephritis, colitis, arthritis, hepatomegaly and splenomegaly, and pericarditis. reiter’s syndrome includes gonococcal urethritis, monoarticular arthritis, and uveitis. The burgeoning field of psychosomatic medicine has noticed many correspondences between emotional states and physical ailments: melancholy corresponds to liver dysfunction, suppressed irritability correlates with peptic ulcer, suppressed anxiety is commonly seen in ulcerative colitis, anal-retentive personality types tend to suffer from constipation and hemorrhoids, “type A” personalities have a particular blood type and increased incidence of hypertension and early myocar- dial infarctions, and compulsive personalities with suppressed anger tend to be cancer-prone.

Such correlations are known, but precisely what determines the pathways of these correspondences? In some instances, speculation centers naturally on the nervous system or the circulatory system as pathways for metastasis. Chinese medicine, based upon centuries of observation, has developed quite specific correlations between par- ticular acupuncture points and particular organs, as well as correla- tions between specific organs and corresponding mental and emotional states, but it does not explain the origins of these correspondences.

Another perspective is derived from the modern science of embry- ology. Upon further research, it may well be found that many of the pathways arise from embryological primordial tissues. Each person begins life as a single cell. This cell gradually develops in an orderly fashion into an enormous number of cells through progressive cell di-
