CASE I:

In this case the patient reports a dramatic improvement. Every major symptom – physical chief complaint, energy, mental/emotional symptoms-are reported to be definitely better compared to before administration of the first remedy. Even minor symptoms have undergone favorable change. The homeopath is encouraged by this report, but every detail is nevertheless checked for accuracy. Upon inquiry, it turns out that the patient did indeed experience an initial aggravation of some or all symptoms within a few days after taking the remedy. This was forgotten, however, in the face of the dramatic improvement which ensued during the rest of the month.
Of course, this is the best of all possible responses. This report is what every homeopath wishes for every patient. The initial aggravation signifies the stimulative effect of the remedy upon the defense mechanism, and the definite and dramatic improvement confirms this action. In any practice, perhaps only 70% of such patients will actually recall the original aggravation. Another 30% may experience a response which is just as curative in the long run, but the initial aggravation is not clearly recalled. Sometimes this is because the symptoms were already so aggravated prior to taking the remedy that a further aggravation was difficult to distinguish. Often, the primary symptoms in such cases are mental or emotional, and quantitation is difficult. In any case, the key observation is that all symptoms on all levels have been improved within one month.
A distinct initial aggravation of short duration (from a few hours to three days) followed by a definite amelioration within one month signifies that the remedy was precisely the simillimum. It also means that the prognosis is very good for the patient, because the original disease was pri- marily focused upon functional levels and involved very little organic pathology. The patient’s defense mechanism was already quite strong prior to administration of the remedy, and the well-selected medicine has further strengthened it in a curative
