titude, etc., so we cannot view remedy expressions as being isolated entities. Once we have the totality of symptoms, we must spend time meditating on them as an integrated totality, especially in relationship to patients in whom we have seen the remedy act curatively. In this way, gradually we acquire a sense of the “essence” or “soul” of the remedy. This final integrated image of the remedy, in the last analysis, is beyond mere words; it is “known” in a living, experiential way – just as one gets to know a friend.

The symptom image of a remedy can be viewed diagrammatically as in Figure 13. The totality of symptoms has an integrated “form” or “shape” as represented. Each bulge corresponds to a specific symptom. The shape of the illness in the patient, ideally, is similar to that of the appropriate remedy, but it is shown larger in size because of the inten- sity of its morbific influence in the patient. In this sense, the “shape” of the remedy and of the disease can be understood as having the same “resonant frequency,” as we have discussed previously; the resonant frequency produces a particular pattern of symptoms in diseased indi- viduals and in provers. It is this matching of symptom-pictures which is the primary task of the homeopath in prescribing a remedy.

Figure 13: Each fluctuation in pattern can be viewed as a specific symptom manifested by either the prover or the patient. In the illustration, the patient’s symptom picture is repre- sented with greater amplitude because the intensity of symptoms can be expected to be greater. The goal in prescribing is to match the pattern of symptoms.

In the homeopathic literature, there are a variety of types of mate- ria medicas offering descriptions at different levels in the process of emergence of a remedy. Perhaps the best way to illustrate this point is to follow the “growth” of the image of a remedy through several mate- ria medicas. We will consider one of the most well-known medicines in homeopathy, Arsenicum album. To begin with, there are the highly detailed raw data of the original proving. This proving was quoted by Hahnemann in his Chronic Diseases, and it is one of the classic landmarks in homeopathic literature. Because this proving is so exem-
