  1. 2. Those who obviously omitted to recall symptoms or who exhib- ited superficiality in reporting. These tendencies indicate either a lack of mental clarity or a lack of sincerity.
  2. 3. Those who suffer from hypersensitivity diseases – such as asth- ma, hay fever, allergies, food hypersensitivities, etc.

Location for the Experiment

Ideally, three experiments should be conducted, each in different locations and on subjects of different nationalities. Because reactions vary so much depending on environment, provings should be conduct- ed in the mountains, on the low plains, and by the seashore.

For a proving to be absolutely reliable, these ideal conditions should be met. However, it is unlikely that such elaborate experiments will be practical for some time. As a compromise, therefore, it is recommend- ed that the experiment should be conducted in a place in the country, preferably at an altitude of about 1500 feet, with clean air and water. It should be a quiet environment, free of hectic and anxious urban influ- ences.

The purpose of such a natural environment is to raise the health of the subjects as high as possible before the actual experiment. As an ap- proximation, fifteen days in the country should suffice. After approx- imately the fifteenth day, symptoms reported are likely to represent expressions belonging to the person’s true constitution. Once proper stabilization has been accomplished in such a natural environment, the actual experiment can begin.

The Experiment

The experimental proving of a new drug must always be carried out with a double-blind format in which neither the experimenters nor the subjects know the drug being proven. (Figure 12) The director of the experiment decides upon the substance to be proven and insures that the methods used during the experiment conform to the highest stan- dards. The director also decides, according to routine randomization techniques, which subjects will receive the experimental substance and which will receive placebos. Approximately 25% of the provers are to be given placebos while the rest receive the test substance. The substance to be tested and placebos must be packaged identically, and the code identifying test subjects from placebo subjects must be kept secret from both the experimenters and the subjects. Strict instructions must be given to all provers that they must not communicate with each
