Figure 9: A schematic diagram representing the layers of miasms. Each miasm is manifest as a particular symptom picture, each symptom having a unique degree of intensity. In order to remove a particular layer, the specific remedy which resonates with that level of vibration must be prescribed. Then, with time, the next layer will manifest itself by a new symptom picture which may be similar but subtly different. A new remedy is prescribed for this layer, and the process continues. In this way, the patient eventually reaches a state of lasting cure after all of the major miasmatic predispositions have been systematically removed.

It is always necessary to remove the uppermost layer first. If a remedy is given which corresponds to a deeper layer, it will not cure. Moreover, it may change the symptom pic- tures of overlying layers enough so that the correct prescriptions may become obscured.

of predisposition. With time, the next layer will likely assert itself, and the patient may display symptoms such as great sensitivity to cold, excessive desire for sweets and soft-boiled eggs, vertigo from high places, and burning of the soles of the feet while in bed. The homeo- path now perceives that the new complex of symptoms, while not as crippling to the patient as the headaches, still represents a limitation to the patient’s freedom. Calcarea carbonica is prescribed on the basis of this new totality of symptoms, and the patient’s health improves even further without relapse of the headaches. In this example, Hahnemann would have said that this second layer was due to the Psoric Miasm.

In this way, we can see the wisdom in Hahnemann’s statement that homeopathic treatment must be continued until all the layers of predis- position have been removed. If the patient and homeopath were to be satisfied before all the layers were removed, the remaining untreated condition would be likely to slowly degenerate over time into an irre- versible pathological process, particularly if further exciting causes oc- cur. Each layer shows itself in the beginning as a few relatively minor symptoms which may be difficult to discern. Over a period of perhaps years the image becomes more clear, and the appropriate remedy can then be prescribed. In some cases, this process of complete cure can
