d. Surgical anesthesia
With surgical anesthesia we witness the exteriorization of the finer levels of the organism, quite similar to what we witness in fainting. Many times we hear of strange phenomena in both of these categories. People are aware of being out of their bodies and watch their physical form lying on the operating table or on the ground; they may even hear the conversation of others in the vicinity. These testimonies once again confirm the theories expounded in this treatise. Such experiences have been reported again and again during comatose states or "pre-death" situations.
For an example of a drug experience, James cites Symond’s description of undergoing chloroform anesthesia:
