DIRECTION OF DISORDER
39. The defense mechanism always has a built-in cen¬trifugal tendency to keep disorder on the periphery (mucous membranes, skin), while a negative stres-sor has the opposite—a centripetal tendency—and thus pushes the disturbance to the center of the organism (Figures 24 and 25).
Figure 24: The organism will always tend to push the disorder to the periphery.
Figure 25: Negative stimulus tends to push the disorder towards more central or deeper organs or levels.
This mechanism is very important for the organism because it automatically evaluates the levels, systems and organs, and always tries to keep the disturbance in systems and organs that are more peripheral and therefore less important for the survival of the organism.
