himself nocturnal cramps, slowly becoming more frequent until they occurred every night, even several times a night, more on left side, spreading to the other muscles of the leg. Sometimes excited by bending the foot downwards, sometimes waking from sleep with acute and severe pain. The muscles remained painful till next day. China XM removed them for several weeks, repetition made them disappear completely. Klunker also cured a tensive sensation in calf on walking that urged to stand still, with nocturnal cramps in calves, with China.
Feet feel tired, as if bruised. The ankles are strained easily, with excessive pain (Arsenicum, Calcarea silicata).
Jerk-like tearing in foot bones: tarsal, metatarsal, phalanges, especially in joints, unaffected by motion, but increased by touch. Rheumatism of metatarsopha¬langeal joints of left foot, pain extreme when wearing slippers, but pretty comfortable with tight shoes on (Boger).
Sticking-crawling from great toe up to dorsum of foot, as if frozen, in the evening while sitting, disappearing on standing and walking.
Oedematous swelling of feet, also of soles; characteristically very soft and white or pale red, but in some cases also tense, hard, red and hot, with dark- coloured urine.
Sleep
Hahnemann says: ‘Almost never will the bark be found curative unless disturbances of the night’s rest similar to those produced by the remedy in the healthy are present ’ And in a footnote he gives a r sum of these disturbances: ‘Restless sleep at night with dreams that cause anxiety and starting from sleep, on waking from which one cannot collect one’s senses, or about which one continues to be anxious after waking, are peculiar to China.’
Some proving symptoms that illustrate and detail these characteristics:
‘Sleeplessness until midnight, with pressive pains all over the head.’ On the other hand, there is often ‘periodic’ waking from sleep at midnight or at 3 a.m. with different complaints (headache, colic), frequently every night or every other night, and afterwards the sleep will be unrefreshing. As a lot of ailments (flatulence, diarrhoea, colic, respiratory disorders) will preferably occur at night, the night’s rest will often be seriously affected.
