hand; or as if the hair were torn out.
‘Contractive pain’ on left side of occiput externally; seems as though the skin were drawn to one point; not aggravated by touch.
Burning pain on forehead, with hot perspiration on it. Or else: great internal heat of face, with cold sweat on the forehead. The perspiration will sometimes be oily or fatty.
Profuse sweat in the hair on walking in the open air.
Eyes
Ophthalmia, with reddened conjunctiva; motion of eyes painful, ‘as of mechanical hindrance,’ as if from sand or some foreign body under the lids. Profuse lachrymation. Eyes sensitive to bright sunlight or artificial light, photophobia; better in the dark. Painfulness of the eyes on moving them, on every effort to use them, as in reading or writing.
Pain from the eyebrow down to the lid, with a feeling as if it were being closed, as though it were tired.
Smarting first in one, then in the other eye, with lachrymation of the painful eye. The tears may be scalding hot, with much burning and biting.
Lachrymation with a crawling, formicating pain on the inner surface of the lids. Neuralgia about the eyes, ciliary or supraorbital neuralgia; worse from the slightest touch; periodically recurring, e.g. beginning at 8 a.m. every day and completely disappearing at 2 or 3 p.m. The pain may be extremely violent, ‘as though a knife was thrust between bulbus and orbita and turned around to gouge out the eye.’
Flickering and sparks before the eyes, or black spots, or complete but transient obscuration of vision; with weakness amounting to faintness.
Dimness and weakness of vision, with dilated pupils that are rather insensitive and unable to accommodate, don’t even contract much if sudden bright light meets the eyes.
Red eyes, with pressive burning pain and much heat in them.
Unable to read; letters run together, they look ‘pale’ and are perceived as a sort of black area with white margin. Or else the contrary problem of accommodation: nocturnal blindness. Yellow whites of eyes. Dim-looking cornea, ‘smoky’ fundus.
