environment and so perceptive, they are quite open to outside influences; consequently they can be easily hurt. When they get older, the expressive quality is often lost because of the hurts they have suffered.
Causticum children suffer from a weakness of the nervous system; thus, when confronted with a situation of great emotional impact, various neurological disturbances may occur e.g., tics, tremors, twitching, and even convulsions. Chorea is also frequently seen and may likely affect only a single part of the organism, such as one arm or one shoulder, the facial muscles, etc.
Generalities
One of the special centres of action of Causticum is the nervous system, especially of the motor nerves, but also the sensory. Causticum is a remedy in many cases of paralysis and paresis. One of its particular qualities is that the paralysis tends to affect single parts, often only on one side of the body (usually but not always the right side). There may be paralysis of the eye muscles, the eyelids, with ptosis, the visual or auditory nerve, the tongue, the vocal cords, the oesophagus, the bladder, the limbs, and so on. An isolated weakness of the right deltoid muscle, for instance, is a peculiar symptom that has repeatedly been cured by this remedy.
Another characteristic is the gradual onset and development of the paralytic condition; beginning with weakness and an increasing loss of muscular power, until a full-blown paralytic state is reached. It is a kind of slowly developing fatigue on the physical level, as I described it for the intellect above; and this fatigue will increase to exhaustion; not the total exhaustion of Muriaticum acidum, but rather a fatigue which is so great that they cannot lift a leg.
Paralytic states of Causticum are often combined with another great action of the remedy, namely shortening and induration of
