An important point about the sensitivity of Causticum is that their susceptibility to oppression from outside, and their inclination to suffer grief, is not coupled with expressiveness, at least in adults. Rather they keep their grief inside and dwell upon it. These persons are not quick, versatile or open as is Phosphorus; there is more of an inclination to ponder upon matters. Even Causticum children appear to be deep thinkers, taking things more seriously than Phos., and they suffer a lot more in the course of their reflections.
This will also apply to the sympathetic qualities of the Causticum patient. The Causticum person will be one of the first to rush to help at the scene of an automobile accident; generally, however, the Causticum sympathy resides deeply within the individual and requires a period of time for reflection, perhaps weeks or even months, before it is manifested in action. This remedy does not have the immediate and superficial anxiety about trifles which characterises Arsenicum, Phosphorus and Sulphur. Causticum people will more quietly dwell upon an issue, and they are not as anxious about others as the above three remedies. While they are apt to act immediately on seeing some injustice taking place, they suffer but do not act when, for instance, they see someone suffering with his health.
This is an important differentiation between Causticum and Phosphorus. The Causticum sympathy is usually not attended by anxiety about health. Phos., on the other hand, is quite likely to develop a full-blown anxiety about health as a consequence of sympathising with another. For instance, were a friend of a Phos. patient to suffer from a backache, the Phos. person might well find himself experiencing a similar pain. This sensation might then trigger a fear of cancer. Were a young friend to die of a heart attack, Phos. would readily and sincerely sympathise; later he would probably develop symptoms of angina. This anxiety is not seen in Causticum; despite the sympathetic element, Causticum persons do not develop similar symptoms because of fear and anxiety. It is possible, however,
