they can have moments when they seem to be alive and joyful, but this is only superficial, the slight melancholy underneath persists all the time.
Often there is a state of general indifference, joylessness and apathy, with a certain tendency to be irritable, which may be exhibited by being easily startled and sensitivity to noise. This is an emotional state that predisposes them to start drinking alcohol. Alcohol will stimulate them and make them feel momentarily better and they get into the habit of drinking. Actually we do not know which comes first: the alcoholism or the emotional state that leads to the alcohol. But it is a fact that both features belong to Carduus and both can be cured by Carduus, and many of the liver ailments of Carduus are due to the habitual abuse of alcohol.
Generalities
The following are some more pathological states where Carduus may be indicated:
Cases of liver dysfunction with vomiting of blood, the blood not being bright as in Phosphorus, but very dark.
Bilious vomiting at regular intervals, with great sensitivity to cold. Sick headache ending in bilious vomiting.
Vomiting with abdominal pain at the same time. Burnett relates a case with severe attacks of vomiting with pain in the abdomen. The vomiting was relieved by remedies symptomatically related, but the pain was not. An examination showed ‘liver and spleen both very much enlarged so that they seem to fill the abdomen.’ This symptom decided for Carduus. Kunze gives this indication: cramps in stomach with contracting pain, vomiting when the pain has reached its climax.
