Celle Seminar I, Case 2: Insanity

(D.): I can only do so at the risk of repeating my mother’s opinion. My father has dealt extensively with literature on this problem, including occult literature. We have often discussed this. (H.): Perhaps I should say two things in this context: I once read a book which made me ask myself whether it is possible that, in certain variants of mental or spiritual variations from normality, there isn’t, at some stage, an extraneous influencing factor. Could it be that in some cases the circumstances in an acute phase can actually result in a »switching off« of the patient’s conscious level of perception? Consider things like Kirlian’s photographs. Perhaps in such an acute phase, the protective aura becomes unstable, or perhaps it even fails. In fact, the aura may be so weakened that spiritual entities which need to manifest themselves are then able to come forth.
(P.P.): It is very interesting that you explained it in this way, because precisely herein lies my difficulty with you. (G. V.): What is the difficulty exactly?
(F.P.): My view of my illness is that the fears, which developed in my childhood and which my husband has instilled in me in one way or the other, come out in the acute phases of my illness. This is where we disagree; this is essentially the root of the argument between us. It is really a question of labeling: what my husband means when we talk about demons or when he mentions God and what I mean. His interpretation of what he’s read, as I understand it, is that the demons are being driven out when I have a psychotic episode.
(H.): This is not true. Perhaps I can try and correct this view. I believe that in the event that man can no longer exercise his influence, Christ must intervene to improve the condition of the whole. Faced with such a situation—where you are witness to such a terrible thing like someone lying on the floor, beating the ground with her fist while saying, »I’m there already« meaning hell—you really have to ask yourself, is it possible that extraneous influences are at work trying to instill fear? In short, is their method of interfering with the individual accomplished through the process of fear?
