into the molds, or remedies, that he knew, even when they didn’t fit. Therefore, he was not able to be objective. We all have this tendency to some degree. After all, our knowledge is based on what we’ve learned from the materia medica. It’s natural that we compare everything we encounter with the information we find in this source. If someone names a symptom that we’ve never heard of before, one which we cannot find in any of our references, it is tempting just to say, »Forget about it, leave it out.« Don’t do this, don’t just disregard a symptom that you’ve never seen before. We have our limitations within which we work, and we are all prejudiced to some degree. Nevertheless, you should try and break out of your prejudices in order to get the best results possible. Ask questions that will force answers that are perhaps contrary to what you are actually hoping to hear, and don’t reject them; otherwise you are just forcing your case into the remedy you’d like to see and can understand.
What prejudices you against Phosphorus in this case is the woman’s character. Causticum has been given because it is a closed remedy. Causticum and Phosphorus can both be very closed, but it is impossible that she is Phosphorus. Then we investigate and we see the definite possibility of a Medorrhinum because we hear about her late nights, amelioration by the sea, as well as the fact that she is not very sexually active at the moment. What does it mean? Does this mean that you should rule out the possibility of Phosphorus?
With all remedies we have steps. For example, a person might be thirsty on one level, and then on the next level he becomes thirstless. You’ll see this happening because the patient has gone up to another level where his symptomatology is mostly focused around the mental sphere while the physical sphere has become normal. That’s why an insane Phosphorus does not have to be thirsty. On one level you may see fears, and on another level you may see that the fears are gone and a kind of depression has come up. Take another example: When you have a fear of insanity in Calcarea carbonica that overwhelms the person to the extent that he constantly thinks he’s going insane, all the other fears of
