Celle Seminar I, Case 1: Epilepsy/Asthma

person’s mental-emotional make-up, all the better. If I cannot get this sort of information, then I will go on what I can find out about the seizures and attacks along with details about local symptoms. I will exploit anything possible. In this case, the only area that I could rely on was the person’s inner state, her mental-emotional structure. Which remedy does this call to mind? Excitable remedies? There are a lot of excitable remedies; this idea alone is not enough to base a prescription on. I could see that she was uneasy. She must have had quite strong palpitations. When I asked her she said, »Yes, I’ve had some palpitations.« She had them because the situation was very bad. Investigating a patient’s history under these conditions is the worst thing you can do. Altogether there were ten people in the room, with technicians, translators, and everyone else. In the midst of all these people I had to try and understand this person in depth; this was the most difficult aspect of the case. In order to awaken feelings of trust and understanding, you must be able to talk one-to-one with your patient. Therefore it was not surprising that she resisted opening up during the interview, that she revealed as little as possible. Never mind how much I tried to make her loosen up and forget herself, to forget the mental interference. It was not possible to set her at her ease, which I could understand.
What information did I manage to obtain from her? We’ll go through this together. We have her first traumatic experience: the complications at birth with the umbilical cord. This traumatic experience must have had an effect on the person’s constitution. I am not in a position to say how deep this effect might have been on the brain or on the entire organism. I don’t know if anybody can really determine the depth of such traumatic experiences. But it is a fact that this was a traumatic experience for her, there can be no question about that. Nevertheless, this is only one aspect of the case. If this fact fits in with the other points that may arise in the course of analysis, then we’ll take it into further consideration. If, however, we find that it does not fit, then we may decide to forget about it. For example, we may forget about it because either the remedy, for instance Carbo vegetabilis, does
