(G.V.): Very shortly after the child was born he developed this eruption. The eruption was suppressed quite early on in his history. We see here points for Pulsatilla, especially because of the disgust; points for Causticum, especially because of the pathology and the causative factor; and points for Natrum phosphoricum, which I brought up and which may be relevant to this case. One of these three remedies has to be the first. We have three chances. I would like to know which one of these three remedies you would prefer. Who would prefer Pulsatilla? (counts) All right, nine. What about Causticum} (counts) And Natrum phosphoricum? Well, that’s it: Causticum, Natrum phosphoricum and Pulsatilla, in that order. It is very difficult to reach a firm decision here. I was afraid to mention earlier that Causticum may aggravate the situation. But we could try it anyway, using first low doses to see what sort of reaction he has. Causticum is in the rubric disgust, and it is one of Jahr’s additions.
(A.13): May I ask you why you are so sure that Phosphorus did not act?
(G.V.): Well, I am not sure. However, when I inquired into the matter I did not see any change to indicate that Phosphorus did act. But that wasn’t the only thing that I took into consideration. I also saw that the child’s make-up was not completely Phosphorus. I have good reason to believe that the remedy is Natrum phosphoricum or Causticum or Pulsatilla. I would have tried the remedies in a slightly different order: Natrum phosphoricum and then Causticum and then Pulsatilla. I like the fact that I saw Causticum in the bend of the joints; that is a confirming point. And of course, his paralysis is also a confirming point; in fact, this symptom is important enough to make me change my mind. When I came into the class I was seriously considering Natrum phosphoricum, but now that I have looked further into the repertory, I am more drawn to Causticum, for the reasons I’ve already mentioned. It is said that Phosphorus and Causticum are inimical because they are very similar remedies. If the one is given and it does not act, we would not consider that a remedy was given, and so we would then give the other. But if Causticum
