Celle Seminar I, Case 5: Myelogenous Leukemia

(M.P.): It depends on the person I’m talking to. I like to be chal¬lenged and stimulated during discussions. Usually people just talk around the point, but I like people to make an effort to be precise about what they want to say. (G.V.): What do your friends think of you? (M.P.): You’d have to ask my friends. But in general, I think they would say that I’m not an easy person.
(G.V.): Why, because you are straightforward? Is it that you tell them your opinion directly and that upsets them? (M.P.): Yes, sometimes I am too direct and sometimes much too closed, two extremes. For example, there are times when I’ll only say what is absolutely necessary and walk around with a horrible expression on my face for a week, and then the following week I am totally opposite. My mood can change to the total opposite from one minute to the next.
(G. V.): What sort of weather do you like best, what temperature? (M.P.): Tropical. I like to go into tropical glasshouses. I like it warm and humid. But I’ve never lived in a tropical country, so I don’t know if I could stand it all the time. (G.V.): Do you ever feel worse in cold, dry weather? (M.P.): If it is really cold, then it’s okay. But I hate winter in town; when you go downtown it is dirty and cold all the time, and then you go into the subway and it is hot again, an artificial heat. I don’t like artificial heating, but I do like snow. (G. V.): Why? Because of the coldness or the whiteness or because you can ski then?
(M.P.): For all those reasons. Snow is nice to look at, and I also like it when it’s very cold. (G.V.): Do you enjoy cold weather?
(M.P.): Yes, if it snows, but if it just rains and is cold and humid, I don’t like that.
(G.V.): When you go to sleep, do you fall asleep easily? (M.P.): Not all the time. The last three days I had difficulty falling asleep; I’d toss and turn before I could get to sleep. (G.V.): Only the last three days? (M.P.): Yes, normally I fall asleep easily.
