THE BERN SEMINAR-PAGE 30

(G.V.): Do you salivate during sleep?
(F.P.): I don’t think so; there were times when I was little that I used to
wake up with that, but generally not now. I have been shivering, and
yesterday I took Calcium, and I was very tense from that. This morning
I have not taken tryptophan.
(G.V.): Do you ever get a metallic taste in your mouth?
(F.P.): I don’t know, I smoke, so…
(G.V.): How much do you smoke?
(F.P.): I’ve been smoking an awful lot! Normally, if I’m feeling fine, I
only smoke maybe three to five cigarettes a day at the very most, and
lately I’ve been smoking one right after the other.
(G.V.): So you need company, you need somebody always with you.
(F.P.): Yeah… (Sobs) When I feel so tense and nervous, it feels like I
have to get up and walk and do something, be constantly moving.
(G.V.): Do you feel like getting up and moving now?
(F.P.): (Laughs) Just about…

(G.V.): You see the points by which differentiation is carried out here? You have to differentiate between different remedies, for instance between Gelsemium – which can come into the picture because of the alternating states of cold and heat, the weakness, the trembling, the internal trembling, the cold-ice feeling, etc. – and some other remedy. Another remedy that you could be thinking of is Mercury, because of the same extreme states of the heat and cold, which Mercury cannot tolerate. Also the fact that she feels unprotected is like Mercury: feels quite unprotected and vulnerable to external influences. You might think that she belongs to Phosphorus because she drinks. But as you see, she has only drunk a few times and then only a little bit of water, which is not Phosphorus. Or perhaps you might think of Arsenicum because she wants to get up and walk, and she has to be constantly on the move, and she is afraid, but she is not afraid of death. We say that Arsenicum is mainly afraid of death, an overwhelming fear of death. Where is that overwhelming fear of death here? Does she have it? What is the real issue here? »I don’t want to grow up,« it is an issue of being immature. She is a twenty-two year old who is very immature. Although she is married, she still feels like a child who wants to be protected by her mother. You could say that she has regressed to the age of twelve, or even younger. I mean, that is how a child of nine would face
