The Vital Force in Disease

THE IDEA that there is an intelligent vital force animating the human organism, and that this vital force may be a field similar or analogous to the electromagnetic field, opens new possibilities for therapeutics which can truly lead toward an era of energy Medicine. Understanding the laws and principles involved in such an idea can be of vast usefulness to practitioners and the patients being served by them. In this chapter, I shall present the hypothesis that the vital force behaves in an analogous way to the electromagnetic fields and perhaps conforms to standard concepts in physics pertaining to those fields. I shall then attempt to describe the implications of such an idea in the therapeutic context.

Basic Concepts of Physics

To begin with, some basic terminology used in standard physics must be presented. This terminology will be described only briefly; for further details, one needs merely to refer to any standard textbook of physics.

As described by Fritjof Capra in the previous chapter, particles and waves are completely interchangeable at the atomic and subatomic lev- els. The electrodynamic field is the interrelationship of particles which are affecting each other through charge and movement. These relation- ships are definable in terms of oscillations or vibrations. As electrons move around the nucleus of an atom, for instance, the motion can be described as a “wave,” from the point of view of an external observer. As it circles around the nucleus, the electron appears to an outside ob-
