slowed peristalsis, perspiration of the palms, pupillary dilatation, etc. A pleasant emotion such as love between two people creates periph- eral dilation of blood vessels, blushing, palpitations of the heart, and emotional and mental excitement. Every stimulus, every emotion, and every thought has a corresponding effect to some degree on all levels of the body simultaneously and instantaneously.

Clinically, the most obvious correspondences are those relating particular organs to specific emotional states. Every thought and emo- tion has a corresponding site it “favors” on the physical body. This area is positively or negatively affected depending on the nature of the thought or emotion corresponding to it. A man undergoing the stress of breaking up a cherished love affair is likely to suffer heart symptoms; another person experiencing difficulty in business is liable to develop a peptic ulcer. A negative thought or emotion will retard the functioning of the corresponding organ or system, whereas a positive thought or feeling will strengthen the function of the corresponding organ.

To illustrate the interaction of corresponding levels in an organism, let us present a few clinical examples which are likely to be seen daily by any general physician:

CASE 1: A woman was brought up by her highly religious parents to consider sex a horrifying affair which ought to be shut out of her thoughts at any cost. She came to the doctor complaining that there was excessive growth of hair on unusual parts of the body such as chest, abdomen, and back, while there was loss of hair on the head almost to the extent of baldness; also, after delayed menarche, she ex- perienced painful and irregular menses which were often late. When she eventually married, she developed severe headaches. In this case, suppression of the sexual instinct from the mental level led to a testos- terone/estrogen imbalance, resulting in a masculinized hair distribu- tion. Eventually, this suppression evolved into another symptom on the mental level – aversion to sex. Marriage inevitably produced further stress on this already weakened level, causing changes on the corre- sponding emotional and physical levels – a feeling of dissatisfaction in her marriage, along with crippling headaches (replacing the hair loss). Originally, the defense mechanism was able to establish an equilib- rium by limiting symptoms to the endocrine level, but the added stress of marriage broke down this defense and forced the defense mecha- nism to reestablish symptoms at a somewhat deeper, and more crip- pling, level.

CASE 2: Another woman, also raised with a strict upbringing, de-
