Celle Seminar I, Case 17: Chronic Gastritis

him. She cannot stand on her own feet and decide things for herself.
(G.V.): She is definitely not a woman who would belong to the women’s liberation movement.
(A.9): A few points: When you asked her questions I got the impression that whenever your eyes met, she looked away so as to prevent you from getting close to her and establishing visual contact. She constantly talked about the pain in her stomach; but when you posed direct questions asking her to describe the pain, she gave an unclear description. I got the impression that she really did not know what was going on in the stomach area, that she was trying to avoid something. There was something strange concerning the story about her father.
(G.V.): Let me ask you a question. If we asked her whether is she an emotional person or a person guided by her head, what do you think she’d say? What would you say? Who says emotional? (counts) Who says guided by her head? (counts) Who says both? Not very many.
(A.10): She does not allow herself to show emotions. When you asked whether she is sympathetic, she couldn’t really admit it. She does not want people to get close to her.
(G.V.): I think we all agree that she was not open—she had certain things which she kept inside—but I think we disagree on her reason for keeping them inside. My impression is that she is quite an emotional person, someone who is not sophisticated. Because she was not trained to let her emotions out—most probably she lived in a quite disciplined environment where she was not able to express her emotions—she learned to keep her emotions inside. I found it very interesting that she has never had a row with her husband. She has never really come to the point of having an intense shouting fight. Why? This is strange because I feel that her emotions are very strong. When I asked her about her first separation, which was due to her husband’s affair), I sensed that she was probably very hurt by that, but she did not fight it. Either she told a lie, or that’s the way things really were, which would mean that she was able to keep her feelings inside.
