Celle Seminar I, Case 16: Rheumatoid Arthritis

(Therapist): I think another important thing is that she goes to bed after midnight, 1:00, 2:00, or 3:00 a.m. She’s done this for many years.
(G. V.): Why do you think you do that?
(F.P.): Even as a child I did it; I used to read in bed before going to sleep. It is very cozy when everything is quiet around you and you are still up.
(G.V.): Don’t you feel sleepy by then? (F.P.): No.
(G.V.): Do you feel more aware as the night progresses? (F.P.): Not necessarily. By 2:00 or 3:00 a.m. I feel quite tired, and then I have to go to bed. But yes, definitely, I become more aware and have more energy at night. (G.V.): How are you affected by the weather? (F.P.): Sunny weather is fantastic for me, I can do a lot of things. If the weather is wet and humid, then it is very bad for me. But the worst time for me is when we have smog. (G.V.): In what position is the pain in your knee worse? Walking, sitting, rising from sitting, moving? (F.P.): When I get up and when I go up the stairs. (G.V.): What about when you go downstairs? (F.P.): Both going up and down. (G. V.): What position is best for you? (F.P.): Sitting or lying down.
(G.V.): If you’re in pain and you stretch your knee, does that make it feel any better or worse? (F.P.): I can’t stretch my leg out any longer, it hurts. (G. V.): Do you feel that your leg has shortened, that you cannot stretch it?
(F.P.): Yes, also my elbow. (G.V.): Are you promiscuous? (F.P.): I haven’t been promiscuous for a few years. (G.V.): How many years? (F.P.): Since 1981.
(G.V.): Were you very promiscuous before? (F.P.): I can manage to count them all on my two hands.
