Celle Seminar I, Case 15: Forgetfulness/Depression

(A.8): Yes.
(G.V.): Now, this is a case of what remedy? Aurum? Sepia? Nux vomica? Nitricum acidum? Phosphoricum acidum? We have to make a differential diagnosis between these remedies. We go on with the investigation. What do we see when we consider these remedies? Which perspires most? Nitricum acidum. Did you notice how I wanted to know exactly what happens in the morning when she wakes up? This is very important for a differential diagnosis, especially with the remedies we have been thinking of, and particularly if you also put Lycopodium on the list.
You need to know how she feels in the morning in order to be able to compare her state against what you know about the different remedies you’re considering. Nux vomica is very irritable in the morning, for the reasons that we mentioned before. Lycopodium is very tired and unrefreshed, but not for a very long period of time. Lycopodium is not so much irritated in the morning as he is tired. He feels that he did not get enough sleep. That is the main idea behind Lycopodium. This is the point where you should think of Lycopodium instead of Nux vomica, because she said that she couldn’t make herself get up. You see, these patients open their eyes and think to themselves, »Ahh, I can’t wake up. I want to sleep a little longer.« That’s the idea. With Lycopodium children you’ll often hear that their mothers have to drag them out of bed in the morning amidst pleas of having just five more minutes of sleep. Lycopodium will calculate exactly how long he can lie in bed, but when the time comes to get up, he jumps right out of bed without hesitation. This is a key to Lycopodium: desire for more sleep, and therefore, unrefreshed. The Nux vomica person does not have a problem with getting up. Even though Nux vomica may have a headache upon waking, he’ll go and wash up, drink his coffee, and then start his day.
Nitricum acidum also suffers from unrefreshing sleep, but it does not seem as though he has suffered a lot and his life is not worth living, like we see in this patient. Nitricum acidum is sensitive to noise in the morning. He will not be able to articulate even a »Good Morning« in return. His attitude is, »What’s a
