Celle Seminar I, Case 13: Chorioretinitis

Now to come back to our case here, it is very interesting to see her in this follow-up. We see that the remedy brought about a very nice and correct reaction. She needed a second dose, most probably because of the severity of the case; then she relapsed again, took the remedy once more, and then she began to get better and stayed better. She most probably does not have cystitis anymore. Her problem is no longer serious, but her symptomatology now tends towards Calcarea carbonica. Why? Because she has a desire for sweets and eggs, perspires, and has cold feet. These last symptoms did not change, although they will probably change with Calcarea carbonica. You have two or three layers in a person. You have the first layer, which consists of the person’s symptoms, which pointed to Baryta carbonica with Calcarea carbonica underneath. Some symptoms are going to remain, for instance, the symptom cold feet did not go away with Baryta carbonica. In fact, it might even have been accentuated by this remedy. This coldness of the feet belongs primarily to the next layer, which is Calcarea carbonica. Here you will also find desire for sweets. The desire for sweets has increased as well as coldness of the feet, though most of the other symptomatology has gone away. However, you may see cases in which some of the symptomatology does not go away. Let’s say you have prescribed a remedy—Natrum muriaticum—because of the patient’s desire for salt. The person does very well with Natrum muriaticum, but his desire for salt remains unaffected. But if you wait long enough, you will see the next layer coming up, for example, Phosphorus. The person changes completely, he opens up. You know that Phosphorus also has a very strong desire for salt. So, you see that in such a case the symptom belonging to Natrum muriaticum and Phosphorus—desire for salt—did not change. Or you could say that the desire for salt was a symptom of Phosphorus, which will be eliminated after Phosphorus but not after Natrum muriaticum.
I’d like to give you another example of why it’s so important that you remember what went on in a case while you simultaneously observe where the case might be heading. Consider a rem-
