Celle Seminar I, Case 13: Chorioretinitis

(G. V.): Do you sigh sometimes? (F.P.): No, I just take deep breaths.
(G. V.): Tell me something else, was the relationship with your father better?
(F.P.): Yes, I like him very much. He’s very tolerant, he tolerates a lot of things. Even though he belongs to this religious group and he shouldn’t be so tolerant, he is still more tolerant than the group allows. I feel closer to him than to my mother. (G. V.): Can you describe your character?
(F.P.): I think I’m a person who gets frightened easily, especially in the dark. And I’m always a bit frightened when I’m alone in my apartment.
(G. V): Do you need company?
(F.P.): Yes, but I can also be alone. I can keep myself very busy if I’m alone. I have a lot of things that I like to do. (G.V.): What else can you tell me about yourself? (F.P.j: I often think that I’m not attractive. (G.V.): You aren’t self-confident?
(F.P.): Right. And I don’t feel in harmony with my body. I would like to be thinner.
(G. V.): Are you aggressive or are you calm? (F.P.): When I’m aggressive I feel it coming—the aggression—but most of the time I don’t express it, but rather keep it inside. I think that you can see that because I blush, I get red. This also happens when I get excited or sad or with every other kind of emotion. I have trouble putting my feelings into words. Over the last few years I’ve tried to learn to be more verbal, because my present boyfriend immediately recognizes that something is going on, and then he says, » Come on, express it, be loud and tell it!«
(G. V.): But you are never able to be really aggressive with others? (F.P.): Right.
(G. V): What do others think about you, what do they say about you?
