Celle Seminar I, Small Remedy: Allium Cepa

Allium cepa has a cold that progresses quickly and extends towards the larynx and bronchi. The result can be a violent laryngitis and pains on coughing as though the throat were being scratched by nails. You will see this in cases of whooping cough; the child grasps his larynx while coughing because the pain is so great. Allium cepa is especially indicated in cases of whooping cough where you see pain in the larynx during coughing, particularly if accompanied by some kind of abdominal disturbance; for example, a lot of flatulence, rumbling in the abdomen, nausea and vomiting. Other conditions that might lead you to think of Allium cepa are polyps of the nose and conjunctivitis where the burning is so bad that the patient describes it as though there were smoke in his eyes. The main idea with Allium cepa is that the organism is in a state of constant catarrh with watery discharge. It will be indicated in cases of hay fever with this peculiar type of catarrh, and is, again, always aggravated by a warm atmosphere. That’s why we see aggravation in August, because this is usually the warmest month of the year. It is very interesting that in Allium cepa we see an aggravation from warmth and amelioration in open air, which might lead us to think of Pulsatilla. However, Allium cepa has an acrid discharge whereas Pulsatilla has a bland discharge from the nose.
You don’t have to remember different modalities for different conditions, because with Allium cepa, whatever the condition, you will see aggravation from warmth towards evening, amelioration in open air, headache and a stuffy head; and aggravation as the day progresses towards evening. Another keynote which you’ll seldom see but which is nonetheless very helpful is that Allium cepa is indicated in all types of neuralgias involving a threadlike pain. A good example of this is the phantom pain that many patients suffer following an amputation.
The mental picture seen with Allium cepa is very interesting. In the repertories and in the materia medica you’ll see some severe mental symptoms, such as insanity. As most of you probably know already, onions were used in earlier times to induce sleep. Allium cepa’s dangerous effect on the brain is an old and well
