(G.V.): Well, yes, I could have asked him, but I already knew the causative factor: tubercular meningitis. Why did I need to pry any further? I had to consider the patient and respect his privacy; besides, he struck me as a square sort of person. Theoretically, you can ask innumerable questions in an investigation, but somewhere you have to call a halt to your probing. You have to be able to judge when further questioning will no longer reveal additional useful information.
(A.14): But then you might prescribe Tuberculinum based on the causative factor alone, when in fact the patient does not have the constitution or the symptoms of Tuberculinum at all. To what extent could Tuberculinum help relieve or improve his illness if it were administered as the primary remedy? Furthermore, there are two Tuberculinum preparations, plain Tuberculinum and Tuberculinum bovinum; how can we differentiate between these two? In short, if you intend to give Tuberculinum without a Tuberculinum constitution and without Tuberculinum symptoms, what change in his well-being would you expect?
(G.V.): As I’ve already said, Tuberculinum is way down on my list of possible remedies. I would fall back on Tuberculinum if I found that none of the other remedies were helpful and I was getting desperate. Of course, I would first try to find the most appropriate remedy. But if by chance, the other remedies do not work and Tuberculinum fits the case, it might provide us with further possibilities for treatment. For example, one possibility is that Tuberculinum might change some of the symptomatology without changing the pathology. This could lead to another suitable remedy, for example, Stannum or Causticum or Plumbum. The second possibility is that Tuberculinum might affect the pathology as well, which would show that it is indeed an indicated remedy. For instance, suppose our patient grinds his teeth and desires pork, then this person would have other characteristics of Tuberculinum. If you gave Tuberculinum in that case, it would have a beautiful effect because the causative factor is so strong and clear. He has some Tuberculinum symptoms, therefore we would expect to see Tubercuh *tum have a strong affect on his pa-
