Celle Seminar I, Case 3: Syringomyelia

nervous system, not the central nervous system. Causticum is a remedy that can be considered with broken down constitutions, which is often the case with tuberculosis. Although I think the most logical remedy is Causticum, I am still not very happy about this decision. Plumbum and Plumbum iodatum were also given at one point, so you might want to try simple Plumbum again. But I believe that this patient is mostly Causticum, or, as a second possibility, Thallium. The total breakdown of remedies would be: Causticum, Thallium, Plumbum, Tuberculinum, Lathyrus, and Physostigma. Lathyrus does not have as much pain, and it is also a very sleepy person. There is also this bilateral condition with the knees knocking together in Lathyrus. Here we have a peculiar case because only one leg is affected and the paralysis is gradual and localized; these are peculiarities of Causticum. All the other remaining symptoms also indicate Causticum.
As you can see from this example, general flat repertorization suffices to find the appropriate remedy. That’s why I did not go off on another track when I heard that he bites his fingers. Instead, I simply asked when his illness started, because this biting of the fingers would make sense if it had started after Plumbum. But it appears that his problems started before, so I do not know why Plumbum iodatum was given at all. Plumbum could be tried, though I would think that we would have much more trembling in Plumbum. Plumbum is usually indicated when we see an effect on the circulatory system, in the presence of athero-matosis, or when the patient cannot walk due to arteriosclerosis. It is a remedy that affects the locomotor system through the va-somotor. Plumbum is a remedy that you would give in cases of paralysis and heavy atheromatosis or arteriosclerosis. In comparison, Causticum is a neuromuscular remedy; it’s a remedy specifically for localized paralysis.
(A.13): Why didn’t you ask him exactly what had happened when he was thirty-five years old and fell into a coma and was later diagnosed as having tuberculous meningitis?
