During the period of dentition it will be very frequently indicated; I do not know of any other remedy that fits so often during the age when children cut their teeth. When problems arise from dentition it will act in a lot of cases though, of course, not always. Sometimes these children become totally unbearable in their behaviour, crying, screaming and whining all the time, nothing pleases them and the least provocation will make them fly into an angry state beyond belief. It is the pain, which they experience as totally intolerable, that drives them to this ‘ugly’ demeanour. Chamomilla will appease such children in a miraculous way within minutes.
Another condition where Chamomilla will be indicated is – in a case of whatever pathology – if you find in the history of the patient that every time the patient was really angry a fever followed in the next few hours or the next day. In the Chamomilla patient heat rises fast in the body when emotions become strong, especially anger or chagrin that cannot be fully expressed by the individual due to social circumstances. The interesting part is that this heat will frequently not be equally distributed to the whole body but can make for instance one cheek red while the other remains pale. This is a well-known key-note for this remedy.
Oversensitivity, Irritability, Whining Restlessness
Chamomilla patients are morbidly sensitive to a lot of things, to light, to noise, to smell, etc., to persons, to surroundings. They are very easily vexed, angered, or chagrined, and tend to experience any disturbance as intolerable, even the slightest. Their emotions can be so intense as to cause fainting. Irritability and impatience are outstanding features of this remedy. But most of all they react irritably to pain which they perceive as extremely strong and unbearable. Mental calmness in tolerating pain is actually, as Hahnemann points out, a contraindication for Chamomilla: ‘It seems to be not applicable in persons who are composed and patient when in pain.’
