stomach. ‘Burning in cardia on empty eructation, as from acidity of the stomach. Burning in stomach with transient pressure there.’ Nausea 4 to 5 p.m.; relieved after eating supper.
Vomiting with simultaneous abdominal pain.
Vomiting of blood, especially of black blood, is a prominent symptom in connection with liver or spleen disorders; haematemesis that relieves the general condition of the patient.
Pressure in the stomach is a well-confirmed action of Carduus. It may be felt on awakening at night (also waking the patient from sleep) and the whole day through, or it comes and goes all day. Pressure in the stomach with much eructation of air; distension of the stomach. Much sensitivity of the stomach (and liver) region to external pressure.
In obstinate morning vomiting of pregnant women (before breakfast), in one case without any stomach problems all day and a good appetite, Carduus has proved curative.
Abdomen
As stated under ‘Generalities’, Carduus has a strong affinity to the liver, and so the liver symptoms are very prominent. To avoid repetition, I will only give a short summary: liver enlarged, mainly in transverse direction, and congested; hard and very sensitive to pressure; especially the left lobe but also the right; hepatic infection with involvement of the lungs, with haemoptysis and haematemesis, with respiratory encumbrance and cough on pressing upon the liver region, with stitches in side; in liver cirrhosis or other damage to the liver from alcohol, death-cap mushroom, or other influences; in jaundice.
The liver pain is usually of a pressive, tensive, drawing, and stitching quality. ‘Sensation of pressure and tension in the liver while lying on the left side’ (left lobe affected).
Schulz gives this indication: ‘In the peculiar painful attacks in upper part of colon ascendens and liver region, not always clearly interpretable as to aetiology, repeatedly occurring particularly in women; and in veritable cholelithiasis, too.’
The violent gall-stone colic attacks have already been mentioned. Kent says: ‘It establishes a healthy flow of bile, and thereby cures the condition that favours the formation of gall-stones’, a statement which has been repeatedly
